George and Gladys Lamping lived on a rented farm in Wilton Center, IL after their marriage in October 1924 when the well on the farm soured and they moved into Joliet where they bought a house at 607 Plainfield Avenue. In 1925 George Lamping joined the Joliet Police Force on which he served until his death in 1945. In 1933 (July 11, 1937 according to Aunt Helene) he was instrumental in apprehending 5 armed robbers who attacked him from behind and knocked him unconscious and then stole $9,333 dollars from a messenger that he was escorting to the bank from the Goldblatts store in downtown Joliet. Because of a description of them and their car the robbers were apprehended within a few weeks. As his parents had been, George and Gladys were also closely aligned with the Catholic Church. When they bought their home on Plainfield Avenue they became members of the newly formed St. Raymond Nonnatus parish, which had been in existence for about 4 years. George was a faithful member of the Third Order of St. Francis at St. Raymond Nonnatus parish. George Lamping died at St. Joseph Hospital in Joliet, IL on January 9, 1945 after suffering a heart attack . He was buried from the Wunderlich Funeral Home in Joliet, IL and lies at rest in Mt.
