Biography* | | Thomas Lamping (Chicago) tells: He was about 20 years old when he went to Leadville, CO. He met his wife, Mary Ann Smith, there and they were married. James ran a charcoal kiln in Webster, CO, was a rancher, and possibly ran a Tavern and lived in Leadville, CO. He and Mary put their ranch in their daughter, Elizabeth's, name when they wanted to apply for retirement pensions, because they could own no land in order to qualify. One of the sons lost the ranch due to incumbrances put on the land through mortgages or loans, I'm not sure which, in the 1940's. [Thomas Eugene Lamping writes the following.] He moved to Colorado, married Mary Ann Smith and had five children. They had five children. They owned most of Grant Colorado. James was a store keeper. He was a good blacksmith and probably more important he was a caretaker for any family in need. He would set up any family with food to eat. This information was taken from the Lamping book adn the funeral notice from Moore Mortuary that Virginia Lamping (wife of Ed Lamping) had in her family bible. THere is conflicting information on James Lamping's birth date. The funeral notice show 27 jan 1861 and the Lamping Book shows 24 jan 1861. I (Thomas Eugene) believe the Lamping book to be correct as grandpa Lamping is the person that had the book printed, and he had the opportunity to make any known corrections. I remember my grandfather as a person who spent his idle time straightening nails to save for future use. He had many kegs of old nails he straigtened and his grandchildren straightened. He lived 87 years and 4 months. |
