Biography* | | Joseph was 5'11'' tall with a fair complexion, Hazel eyes and dark hair, weighing about 200 lbs. On September 1, 1862, at the age of 19 years, Joseph joined the Civil War by enlisting in Company I of the 92nd New York Volunteer Infantry at Potsdam, NY with the rank of Private. On June 11, 1863 he transferred to Company A of the same. Some time after this he transferred again to Company G of the 96th New York Infantry from which he was discharged at Manchester, VA on June 10, 1865. He came to Colorado Territory after the war where he became the first sheriff of Lake County sometime after 1870. He later became the warden of Canyon City Penitentiary. This I have from James Thomas Lamping of Lakewood, CO. Joseph and his brother James Augustus Lamping worked together in the charcoal business on Tennessee Pass and Webster, CO. In September 20, 1899 Joseph lost the lower part of his right leg below the knee. This was due to a buggy accident while mining. Joseph was driving the buggy which was attached to an unmanageable horse. The horse began to run away with the buggy and Joseph had to jump from it as the buggy began to turn over. As he fell he crushed his right ankle quite severely against a log, which necessitated the amputation. Both brothers are buried in the Lamping cemetery in Webster, CO. On December 29, 1903, Joseph Anthony Lamping and Josie F. Sprague were married my Judge R. D. McLeod in Leadville, CO. Joseph died on July 13, 1910 of Cirrhosis of the liver Joseph Anthony was the County Treasurer of Lake County, CO at the time of his death. |
